Common Weight Questions

Weight Units

Gram (g)

A gram is one thousandth of a kilogram, roughly the weight of a paperclip. Nutrition labels worldwide, and increasingly American baking recipes, are written in grams.

Kilogram (kg)

The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass, redefined in 2019 in terms of the Planck constant. The pound is now legally defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms.

Metric ton (t)

A metric ton, also spelled tonne, is exactly 1,000 kilograms. It is about 10 percent heavier than the US short ton, which is why shipping and commodity figures always state which ton they mean.

Ounce (oz)

An avoirdupois ounce is one sixteenth of a pound, or exactly 28.349523125 grams. Do not confuse it with the fluid ounce, which measures volume, not weight.

Pound (lb)

The pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms and contains 16 ounces. It is the standard American unit for body weight, groceries and shipping.

Stone (st)

A stone is 14 pounds, or about 6.35 kilograms. It is still the normal way to state body weight in the United Kingdom and Ireland, but it is not used in the United States.

Ton (tn)

The US short ton is 2,000 pounds, or about 907.18 kilograms. When an American source says "ton" without qualification, this is almost always the unit meant.
